Kill your TV habit

TV habit 2014

It's confession time: despite extra free time in the evenings, I haven't blogged much this month because I've rediscovered the TV habit and I've been binge-watching various series. First I devoured both seasons of Orange Is The New Black and now I am sprinting through all five seasons of Breaking Bad. The addiction has gotten bad enough that I've been suffering from sleep deprivation during the day, yet that still won't stop me from staying up late to watch one or two episodes at night. NOT … [Read more...]

Rainbow hair for kiddos

Pravana Purple 2014

Zoe has had some tremendous milestones this year - weaning, turning four, transitioning to her own bed in her own room across the hall from us, experiencing her first slumber party two floors away from us - that's all really big, cool stuff! She is not a kid who asks for a lot but this year we wanted to give her something special to celebrate some of these milestones, especially what we view as the biggest - transitioning from cosleeping to sleeping on her own. So, I offered to get her ears … [Read more...]

Our cosleeping transition timeline

Solo Sleeper 2014

For my own memory-keeping, as well as for the benefit of any new parents who are breastfeeding and cosleeping and wondering how to eventually transition from family bed to independent sleep, I am sharing our personal timeline here. We've reached some exciting milestones this year and transitioning our sweet girl into her own bed, in her own room, for solo bedtime, was our crowning jewel! I hope I'm not jinxing us by writing about it, but I want to capture all the details. March 2010 - we … [Read more...]

Summertime beach cravings

Beach Cravings

I miss the beach. Somehow, it's just not summer without a visit to the ocean - salt water, sand, seagulls, shells and waves. I'm a bit spoiled, having grown up on Long Island with the beach as my back yard. Of course I didn't truly appreciate it as a kid - I wanted a pool instead! But I sure did enjoy growing up with horseshoe crabs, minnows and mussels as neighbors. What a wonderful, natural playground it was. And now, as a mom, I wish I could give Zoe more frequent access to the beach. Zoe … [Read more...]

The princess thing

Princesses? No Thanks! 2011 - 2012

I am neither a rabid fan nor determined detractor of the "princess thing" in little girls. I do find it interesting to see how Zoe has grown to enjoy the princess thing while at the same time remaining true to her own individual style. Right up until she was about two years old, Zoe did not have much interest in princesses. She was far more interested in animals - whether real, stuffed or cartoon. For her first two trips to Walt Disney World, at 13 months and then at about 23 months, she was … [Read more...]

Family fun with arts and crafts

arts & crafts

Art has been a huge interest for Zoe from toddlerhood on, and we're finding that as she grows and matures, she wants to create and be artistic almost all of the time. A blank pad of white paper, her crayons and her markers, and sculpting clay are always easily accessible in our kitchen - but she craves more. She loves glueing, stickering, drawing, designing, sculpting, building and decorating. So here are a few of our recent projects, creations and finds - hopefully you and your family will … [Read more...]

Summer fun Wednesdays

Summer fun Wednesdays 2014

What mom doesn't wish she could be in two places at once?! I am fortunate to have a meaningful, interesting job that I love. I am happy to be a working mom most of the time. I know there are benefits to Zoe being in daycare, especially since she's an only child. And I certainly don't have the fortitude to stay at home with her full-time! But oh, sometimes I mourn the loss of my Wednesdays off with her. Working part-time, while it had its challenges, was pretty much living the dream. Our … [Read more...]

Mother-Daughter Tea delights

Mother Daughter Tea 2014

At the end of April, just when spring was finally peeking and blinking her winter-rested eyes at us in the form of early blooms, Zoe and I attended a delightful Mother-Daughter Tea hosted by the Westerville Community Center. It was one of the loveliest events we've attended together and will definitely make my 2014 list of the year's favorite Columbus family fun activities. The Mother-Daughter Tea took place at the Everal Barn and Homestead in Westerville, which is a gorgeous location on the … [Read more...]

A purple and yellow Mother’s Day

purple&yellow2014

When Zoe came home from school with faintly purple-stained palms a week or so ago, I smiled knowingly and inquired, "Oh, did you do handprint art in school today?" I was sure it was another awesome, Pinterest-inspired Mother's Day art gift. Her teachers knock them out of the ballpark each year, and I treasure each and every one. "Yep Mommy, I made you a purple flower, your favorite!" Zoe proudly replied. Then more recently, thanks to a sneak preview from another school mom on Facebook, I … [Read more...]

Smashburger is smashing!

Smashburger yums

Do y'all know the expression "smashing"? Growing up in the US with fresh-off-the-boat English parents meant that often times as a kid, I'd find myself saying things and having my friends just give me blank stares in return. Fortunately, now as an adult - thanks in large part to our Anglophile culture and the glorification of all things Brit - most people have heard these terms before or at least can figure out what I'm talking about. Anyway, needless to say I had to find SOME way to describe … [Read more...]
