My life is about to change!

RockNShock post 1

Friends and longtime readers know that I've struggled with my weight, nutrition and fitness program for years. And when I say "struggled," what I really mean is that I love to work out and focus on fitness, but I'm never willing to stop eating carbs and sweets long enough to actually lose weight, get healthy and be fit. If we're being honest. Well, all that nonsense is about to change and my #Fitin2016 journey is about to get REAL up in here. I am thrilled to share that I've been selected by … [Read more...]

Top 3 Columbus GNOs

GNO. Girls Night Out. Rarely have three little letters or words come to mean so much to me. Between work, being a mom and wife, and just the never-ending juggle of every day life, sometimes you need to let your hair down with your friends. GNO for me means fun, laughter, a little more makeup than usual and being carefree and silly for a night. We all need more of that in our lives! GNOs are not as frequent for me as I'd like; I think ideal would be once a month or at least every other month. I … [Read more...]

The awesome rainbow ball

Our little family of three just had a wonderful getaway to Sandusky, Ohio, including a day at Cedar Point and Soak City and an overnight stay at Castaway Bay. We loved all of the above! I'll blog about it all soon. For now, I just want to tell you a story about one part of our happy end-of-summer, pre-back-to-school getaway. It's a story about an awesome rainbow ball and the power of childhood magic. We surprised Zoe with a weekend away to celebrate the end of summer and give her a good … [Read more...]

Year-round fireworks in Ohio

We Want Fireworks!

If you're a fireworks fanatic who didn't get enough of the snap, crackle, pop and BOOM! over the 4th of July, you're in luck. Our beloved daughter didn't get to go see any fireworks this year due to other family obligations, so she was feeling slighted and deprived. She made a compelling case for why we owe her some big-time fireworks after cruelly robbing her of this vital childhood summer experience. And if you think I'm exaggerating here on any level, you need to meet Zoe, who could … [Read more...]

Please stop judging parents

Z at the Seven Seas Lagoon, circa 2011

Dear Internet: STOP JUDGING PARENTS. That poor, heartbroken Nebraska family just had literally the most horrible and unexpected tragedy imaginable happen to them. AT DISNEY! Please stop second-guessing, judging and condemning them. This is Zoebelle at 18 months about to launch into the Seven Seas Lagoon. I put the camera down in time to grab her chubby little butt, but yes she did make it into the water. Anyone who can keep a toddler out of water on a hot day is either an octopus or has … [Read more...]

Storybook Village comes alive 6/18

Storybook Village

On Saturday, June 18, you and your child can wander around a magical Storybook Village and interact with beloved characters from popular kids' books and TV shows. For this one-day event, Ohio Village at the Ohio History Center transforms into Storybook Village to promote early childhood literacy. If, like me, you've not visited Ohio Village before, it's a "living history museum" -- a life-size replica of a small Ohio town in the 1890s, complete with streets, buildings, actors in period garb … [Read more...]

5 things I love about Snapchat

SnapChat duos 2016

If you're a parent, you likely hear the word Snapchat and recoil in horror - it's that "disappearing content" social network that teens and college students use to send naughty photos and videos. It's something I thought I would NEVER want my daughter to use. And yet, you may be surprised to find that I've recently begun using some of Snapchat's features with said daughter - and we're having an absolute blast doing it. Here's what you need to know about Snapchat as a parent - and why you … [Read more...]

My April #fitin2016 update

me at Joshua Tree

This is my monthly update on my continuing mission to get super fit in 2016. It's been three months now of healthier eating habits, tracking my food intake on MyFitnessPal, aiming for 10K steps a day with FitBit and working out most days. I have completed more than 65 intense workouts this year. I've lost 4% of my body weight and still have far to go. I love the P90X3 program. I'm getting so strong! I took spring break off from working out formally but still tried for 10K steps each day and … [Read more...]

Our ear piercing adventure

Ear piercing 2016

If you had asked me a year ago when I planned to get Zoe's ears pierced, I would have likely said "When she asks... I'm in no hurry," or I may have joked that 35 seemed like a good age. As a kid, I had to wait interminably long - until I was 11 or 12 - and while I didn't think we'd wait that long with Zoe, I also never thought we'd do it as young as 5. But last month, that's exactly what we just did - a few weeks before her big 6th birthday so they'd be healed in time for her party. … [Read more...]

Fun, free events for kids

Family fun activities

Raise your hand if you're going stir-crazy and are in desperate need of spring. Or at least spring break. That's me in a nutshell right now! Fortunately, we've found several fun, free family activities that are getting us through the doldrums of winter. Yes, even though we're having an unseasonably mild winter, it still drags on - so some extra free fun outside of the house is always a bonus. Check your local stores or websites to be sure these classes are offered near you, too - and note … [Read more...]
