Copy-Kids gets kids to eat veggies

Disclaimer: Thanks to Copy-Kids for sending me a review copy of their DVD and making this blog post possible. My daughter had fun eating broccoli tonight! That's priceless in my opinion - and the opinion is absolutely my own. I feel like I'm in the presence of a miracle. Okay, maybe that's a wee bit dramatic, but I really am in absolute awe of the Copy-Kids DVD that encourages kids to eat fruits and vegetables simply by showing them other fun, giggly children doing exactly that. It … [Read more...]

The best age for hiking

Before we became parents, E and I loved going for hikes together in Ohio's beautiful, scenic forests - either south to Hocking Hills or north to Mohican State Park. We've hiked alone together, we've hiked with our dogs, but we've always hiked. We went on dozens of wonderful spring, summer and fall hikes in our pre-Zoe years, and even took some great hikes while we were pregnant. Once our little angel arrived, however, she put a bit of a kibosh on our hiking adventures for a time. It wasn't … [Read more...]

Why we love Sofia the First

Zoe and I were relative latecomers to the phenomenal kids TV show that is Disney Junior's Sofia the First. I'm an old school Disney Princess fan and didn't like the idea of some new upstart joining their hallowed ranks. Zoe, on the other hand, just didn't seem to fancy the show much when we first stumbled upon it - she was more into Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, and the Backyardigans. But, sometime recently, all that changed. First, Zoe caught the princess bug … [Read more...]

First-time fun at Build-A-Bear

Disclaimer: Zoe and I were given an incredible opportunity recently to visit and experience the new Build-A-Bear Workshop at Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. We built a wonderful, all bells-and-whistles-included bear in exchange for this post. Thank you again to the beary kind and generous folks at Build-A-Bear! Our poor little girl had a rough week recently. It started with a bad fever and sore throat, then the infection spread to Zoe's ear leaving her in huge amounts of pain. Then, … [Read more...]

The best gifts for kids 3+

Over the past three and a half years, we've both bought and received many gifts for Zoe. I've come to realize that the absolute best toys always have to do with building and creating. This is not just some crazy builder phase we happen to be in right now - this is time-tested and proven. Old building toys she's had for years are her absolute favorites - and new toys are instantly beloved as long as they have something to do with building, creating or inventing. This kid is definitely heading … [Read more...]

Summer of the pool

For us, 2013 will always be the summer of the pool. The first summer that Zoe had unfettered access to a fabulous pool on pretty much all our days off together. The summer that she taught herself to swim at the age of three by watching older kids, and worked so hard at it that by the end of the summer, on the very last day the pool was open, she earned the right to climb the ladder to the diving board, walk out along its high platform, and jump off into the VERY deep end of the pool. But this … [Read more...]

OMG! I forgot about preschool

There's so much to learn as our little ones progress from infant to toddler to preschooler to school age kid. At first it's just learning about parenting and your child herself, but then it progresses to needing to learn about external things like swimming lessons (mommy and me group class or individual lessons? when to start? quick-results ISR or the gentle, longer method?), sports teams (how young can you start? soccer or baseball?) and school. If you're like me and you start out knowing … [Read more...]

Top 10 reasons to “ride all day” at the zoo

A trip to the zoo with baby or even young toddler Zoe meant an hour or two at most of visiting the animals. Oh, how times have changed. Now, a trip to the zoo can be an almost all day endeavor and includes visiting animals, watching the animal show, petting the stingrays and and - if she's very lucky - going on some of her favorite rides. This week, for the first time, I bought us both the "Zoo it all" Ride All Day wrist bands ($9.99 each) so we could do all the rides. We had an absolute … [Read more...]

Just say no to yucky

People are often surprised to hear that I don't drink coffee. Then, their shock turns to true alarm when they find out that I don't drink alcohol, either. You can't imagine how rare it is to meet someone like me, who doesn't drink either of those two incredibly popular things. (The last time I met someone who didn't drink alcohol or coffee, I married him.) It's not for any complex, well thought out reason. It's actually pretty simple and juvenile. You know how when something tastes bad, … [Read more...]

Ohio’s grand carousels

This post originally appeared in 2011 on Discovering Ohio, the official blog of TourismOhio (which also happens to be a client of my agency). Nothing brings to mind the sweet nostalgia of childhood summers like the vivid sights, unmistakable sounds and familiar motion of a grand and glorious carousel. I should know. I've ridden many a merry-go-round since beginning a new fun-finding mission with my young daughter: Zoe’s carousel tour of Ohio. The first carousel in the United States was … [Read more...]
