My first time on Whole 30

On April 1 of this year, my beloved hubby and I embarked on our first-ever Whole 30 challenge. You know the one - it's basically the cult of clean eating. I never dreamed I could do it, because nutrition has always been my #1 vice and nemesis, but I just had to get that sugar demon off my back for good. The end result is that I absolutely loved the experience! Here are my honest, in-progress reactions and experiences from the journal I kept during our Whole 30 in April. Day 1: I didn't plan … [Read more...]

Her first REAL summer

I have experienced daycare guilt - a particular brand of mom guilt found within the working mom guilt sub-category - every summer of Zoe's life. It's gotten worse each consecutive year. As her friends grew browner and more golden-tanned each month of summer, Z always stayed about the same thanks to being cooped up in daycare most of the week. Sure, we take a nice family vacation here or there, and I take a day off whenever possible to spend with her at the pool - but that never seemed like … [Read more...]

Cruising: a perfect multi-gen family vacation

We had a blast with our extended family cruising the Mexican Riviera over Christmas 2017 on the Norwegian Star.¬†If you're looking for a trip the whole family will adore - from kiddos to grandparents - consider a cruise. Modern cruise lines truly offer something for every age and interest! The route We flew to Los Angeles a few days before Christmas, spent a night at my folks' house and then set out with them the next morning for the LA cruise terminal to board the Norwegian Star. We … [Read more...]

Our favorite boots ever

Our darling daughter is growing faster than the speed of light. I swear, every time I turn around she needs new shoes or pants - she's shooting right up like a fairytale beanstalk! There's no doubt she'll be taller than both her parents, and have feet bigger than mine. I'm happy about this (and proud - yay breastmilk! We've pretty much maxed out her genetic potential!) but also sad for one very silly reason: this is her LAST season ever to wear our favorite boots - the incomparable Karinne … [Read more...]

Hidden parenting milestones

There are certain milestones in parenthood that everyone preps you for - breastfeeding, the first time your baby smiles, when he or she rolls over, when he or she sits up, teething, crawling, standing, cruising, walking, potty training... the list goes on. But there are certain milestones that sneak up on you and happen before you realize what's going on. No one prepared you for these - they are what I call hidden milestones. Sometimes you don't know they're even happening until they're behind … [Read more...]

Corresponding with Elves year-round

Our family dove head-first into the world of Elf on the Shelf when our daughter was about four. Each year, her bond with Emmalina, her Elf, grows stronger; she's been known to cry real tears when Emmalina departs back to the North pole on Christmas. We received a special dispensation from Santa right from the start which allows Zoe to hold and hug her Elf. Maybe that's why she and Emmalina have grown so incredibly close? Emmalina has even made special arrangements to stay with us a few days … [Read more...]

One month ago, we fell.

One month ago today, I slipped and fell down hard. I face-planted. I hurt my knees, bit my lip and bashed my head on the ground - it wasn't pretty. In addition to being unbelievably painful and scary in the moment, it was also really, really embarrassing and honestly somewhat traumatic. But until now, you haven't heard a word about it. I kept it to myself and didn't tell anyone outside of E and Z, who were with me when I fell. And now I feel silly that I didn't talk about it, and also a bit … [Read more...]

Get back in your body!

How much time do you spend in your body - really IN your body? Working out, running, doing yoga or doing something else physical that gets you out of your head and truly into your physical self? If you're a mom, my guess is that you don't spend too much time focused on your own body, because you're probably spending most of your time focused on other little bodies. I know this is true for me. I recently had to take six weeks off from working out due to knee surgery and recovery - after a … [Read more...]

Cleared to work out!

Guess who has a big smile on her face and just got medically cleared to return to the gym? This girl!! Rock N Shock Fitness, here I come! It's been a long recovery from my knee surgery on 2/27. I mean it hasn't all been bad - there was a week at Beaches Turks and Caicos that was pretty amazing. More on that in its own post soon! But not all of it was fun - there was pain and stress and way too much eating bad stuff. I complained about it over on the RNS blog so I won't go into it too much … [Read more...]

Why we foster kittens

Last summer, our family took on a special project as a way to give back, celebrate our love of animals and help make the world a better place. Between July and September 2016, we fostered a total of 12 kittens (including one sweet mama of six who was barely more than a kitten herself) from the Capital Area Humane Society¬†and Humane Society of Delaware County. Fostering kittens and cats is an amazing experience - it involves a bit less work and time than fostering puppies and dogs, yet still … [Read more...]
