Family fun with arts and crafts

Art has been a huge interest for Zoe from toddlerhood on, and we're finding that as she grows and matures, she wants to create and be artistic almost all of the time. A blank pad of white paper, her crayons and her markers, and sculpting clay are always easily accessible in our kitchen - but she craves more. She loves glueing, stickering, drawing, designing, sculpting, building and decorating. So here are a few of our recent projects, creations and finds - hopefully you and your family will … [Read more...]

A purple and yellow Mother’s Day

When Zoe came home from school with faintly purple-stained palms a week or so ago, I smiled knowingly and inquired, "Oh, did you do handprint art in school today?" I was sure it was another awesome, Pinterest-inspired Mother's Day art gift. Her teachers knock them out of the ballpark each year, and I treasure each and every one. "Yep Mommy, I made you a purple flower, your favorite!" Zoe proudly replied. Then more recently, thanks to a sneak preview from another school mom on Facebook, I … [Read more...]

Spelunking we will go

Last time I blogged about Olentangy Indian Caverns, we hadn't been down to the caverns themselves yet. I'm happy to share that before the epic summer of 2013 ended, we did in fact go down underground and check out the dark, spooky, wonderful caves! Here's our full report. First, know that you don't have to wait until summer to go. The caverns open back up again April 1. The temperature down in the caves is always a uniform 54 degrees which felt refreshingly cool on the hot summer day we … [Read more...]

Thinking about spring gardens

Disclaimer: I was generously provided free tickets from the Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show prior to writing this post. In addition, Scotts Miracle-Gro is a client at the agency where I work. All opinions are my own. We're thinking about spring gardening a lot at our house these days. I'm a firm believer that if we put our positive intentions out into the universe (also known as wishing upon a star), then our dreams will come true. So come on, spring! Seriously though, I've got a … [Read more...]

Top 10 animal encounters in Ohio

We love animals in our family - I mean LOVE them. So it's only natural that, in addition to having a wonderful at-home menagerie we adore, we seek out cool animal encounters in our free time. This is something E and I did together long before we had Zoe, and since becoming parents we love these critter experiences even more. So, inspired by a recent Houston area blog post I found on this topic, here are our favorite Ohio animal encounters - including a few we haven't experienced yet but plan … [Read more...]

Real life aquarium adventures

When E got a new job working from home in 2013, he said he was going to get himself a fish tank to add a little visual interest and zen to his home office. I imagined something small and compact with a handful of fish, but in my beloved husband's inimitable style, he ended up getting a massive 45 gallon unit that now sustains an entire aquatic ecosystem. Little did I know this aquarium would become such a focal point of fun, interaction and life lessons for our whole family! The aquarium has … [Read more...]

Snow rollers: unexpected winter delight

As I've written before, I don't enjoy winter - I survive it. Sometime right around the day after Christmas, the novelty and beauty of snow wears thin for me. Usually I plan a mid-winter escape to somewhere a bit warmer just to give myself something to look forward to. But it's really, really hard to remain a killjoy about winter when you have a little one in the house who is utterly stoked to go outside and play in the snow! My favorite winter delight this year is Zoe's pure, unadulterated … [Read more...]

A glowing date night review

If you're looking for a romantic, unique date night this winter, I give my highest recommendation to the Bruce Munro: Light experience at Franklin Park Conservatory through February 8, 2014. These glowing images were taken there, but please know that photos and even video cannot do this installation justice. It truly has to be experienced in person for all its enchanting, magical splendor. "You need a medium to find yourself and to explain things to other people, and light happens to be mine." … [Read more...]

5 belated thankful things

This post is part of a blog series that started as my Friday Favorites and then morphed into "5 thankful things” this November. There's so much to be thankful for, especially when you take one look at the news and see how bad it can be out there. I try to maintain an "attitude of gratitude" year round and hope to cultivate that lifelong philosophy in Zoe as well. For now, here's last week's 5 thankful things: Zoe's good health. This is one of those things you almost feel superstitious … [Read more...]
