Taming the holiday chaos

This blog post originally appeared on the Easton MomEscape site. Full disclosure: I serve on the MomE Mavens panel and I adore Easton Town Center! But you probably knew that already. Women and moms everywhere are starting to feel the urgent pull of "getting it all done" before the holidays. It's a time-honored tradition to stress into a frazzled mess at this time of year! We'd like to help with some ideas to tame the chaos. We polled the Easton MomE Mavens - a group of fantastic moms and … [Read more...]

Lightseeing in northern Columbus

Have you noticed that a new word - lightseeing - has entered the vernacular in recent years? Lightseeing is like siteseeing, only it's focused specifically on seeking and admiring festive holiday lights. It's the phenomenon where you pile your family into the car after dark and head out to see neighborhoods decked out with holiday light displays - the bigger, brighter and gaudier, the better. Take my advice - singing Christmas carols as you go only enhances the experience! Last night, after … [Read more...]

Frozen fun in Columbus

Zoe and I got to experience a taste of Arendelle this weekend without ever leaving central Ohio. Since Frozen still seems to be a huge hit with the little ones even after close to a year's time, I figured I'd share our experiences here for your reading pleasure. It all started with a party invitation. We've been invited to not one but three Frozen-themed birthday parties this year, and this Sunday's fete in particular was quite the spectacular event. Hosted at the Glass Slipper in Powell, it … [Read more...]

Shale Hollow Preserve, a creeking gem

Our favorite new Central Ohio family fun discovery and the crowning gem of summer 2014 was without a doubt Shale Hollow Preserve, which just happens to be less than two miles from our house. Although this natural wonderland officially opened in December 2013, we didn't visit it until this summer in peak creekin' season. What a jewel we found. Situated on 188 acres, there are some unique geological features at Shale Hollow that make it more than just a pretty spot to go creek-walking and … [Read more...]

Mother-Daughter Tea delights

At the end of April, just when spring was finally peeking and blinking her winter-rested eyes at us in the form of early blooms, Zoe and I attended a delightful Mother-Daughter Tea hosted by the Westerville Community Center. It was one of the loveliest events we've attended together and will definitely make my 2014 list of the year's favorite Columbus family fun activities. The Mother-Daughter Tea took place at the Everal Barn and Homestead in Westerville, which is a gorgeous location on the … [Read more...]

The wonderful Wonder Room

As you may have noticed by now, if you've been reading this blog for any length of time, I'm a what you might call a bit of a raver.  I'm prone to superlatives... I'm a gusher. I am full of love and enthusiasm and passion, and it splurts out in my writing. It explodes out in my conversations. It splooshes out in my parenting. Being this incredibly positive is a good thing, 99% of the time, most would agree. Except that when I REALLY want to rave about something - when I want to give … [Read more...]

Spelunking we will go

Last time I blogged about Olentangy Indian Caverns, we hadn't been down to the caverns themselves yet. I'm happy to share that before the epic summer of 2013 ended, we did in fact go down underground and check out the dark, spooky, wonderful caves! Here's our full report. First, know that you don't have to wait until summer to go. The caverns open back up again April 1. The temperature down in the caves is always a uniform 54 degrees which felt refreshingly cool on the hot summer day we … [Read more...]

Thinking about spring gardens

Disclaimer: I was generously provided free tickets from the Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show prior to writing this post. In addition, Scotts Miracle-Gro is a client at the agency where I work. All opinions are my own. We're thinking about spring gardening a lot at our house these days. I'm a firm believer that if we put our positive intentions out into the universe (also known as wishing upon a star), then our dreams will come true. So come on, spring! Seriously though, I've got a … [Read more...]

Top 10 animal encounters in Ohio

We love animals in our family - I mean LOVE them. So it's only natural that, in addition to having a wonderful at-home menagerie we adore, we seek out cool animal encounters in our free time. This is something E and I did together long before we had Zoe, and since becoming parents we love these critter experiences even more. So, inspired by a recent Houston area blog post I found on this topic, here are our favorite Ohio animal encounters - including a few we haven't experienced yet but plan … [Read more...]

Snow rollers: unexpected winter delight

As I've written before, I don't enjoy winter - I survive it. Sometime right around the day after Christmas, the novelty and beauty of snow wears thin for me. Usually I plan a mid-winter escape to somewhere a bit warmer just to give myself something to look forward to. But it's really, really hard to remain a killjoy about winter when you have a little one in the house who is utterly stoked to go outside and play in the snow! My favorite winter delight this year is Zoe's pure, unadulterated … [Read more...]
