The princess thing

I am neither a rabid fan nor determined detractor of the "princess thing" in little girls. I do find it interesting to see how Zoe has grown to enjoy the princess thing while at the same time remaining true to her own individual style. Right up until she was about two years old, Zoe did not have much interest in princesses. She was far more interested in animals - whether real, stuffed or cartoon. For her first two trips to Walt Disney World, at 13 months and then at about 23 months, she was … [Read more...]

“Flynn Rider with dark skin”

Last night, as I snuggled Zoe in her big girl bed at bedtime, waiting for her to drift off to sleep, she contentedly murmured, "Mama, I found my prince. I know who I want to marry." Intrigued, I responded softly, "That's great darling, who is your prince?" And she replied, "The Flynn Rider with dark skin."   I lay in the dark, puzzled, trying to figure out who she meant. I didn't really want to keep talking, because I wanted her to go to sleep, but at the same time I was … [Read more...]

Disney on Ice is back!

Are you like me - already sick of winter? For me, the novelty and beauty of snow and ice wears off right around December 26. Then, I have to find fun things to look forward to and get excited about in order to make it through the next three months of cold, gray weather. One of our most anticipated winter activities is taking Zoe to see Disney on Ice. We went last February for the first time and she absolutely LOVED it. Of course, we did the full-on dressing like a princess thing - as do about … [Read more...]

Friday Favorites: fun kid stuff we love

Once upon a time, I had a little weekly blog series called Friday Favorites, which then morphed into my “5 thankful things” this past November. Now, it's back to being Friday Favorites again. Enjoy! This week I'm all about fun stuff for kids that is also fun for adults. Ready, set, go: 1. KidzBop. If you're not familiar with the pop cultural phenomenon known as KidzBop, then you probably don't have a kid between the ages of 5 - 12. Basically, this is a group of kids singing "clean" … [Read more...]

5 belated thankful things

This post is part of a blog series that started as my Friday Favorites and then morphed into "5 thankful things” this November. There's so much to be thankful for, especially when you take one look at the news and see how bad it can be out there. I try to maintain an "attitude of gratitude" year round and hope to cultivate that lifelong philosophy in Zoe as well. For now, here's last week's 5 thankful things: Zoe's good health. This is one of those things you almost feel superstitious … [Read more...]

My first 5 thankful things

I'm seeing a lot of bloggers focus on gratitude and appreciation this month, and it makes sense. Many of my Facebook friends are posting one thing each day to be thankful for. I've decided that each week in November, I'll be posting five things I'm thankful for. Since many of the things I'm thankful for are also my favorite things, I'm wrapping this into my long lost Friday Favorites series - and hopefully I'll keep it going strong even after the month is over. Since I didn't start on time … [Read more...]

Why we love Sofia the First

Zoe and I were relative latecomers to the phenomenal kids TV show that is Disney Junior's Sofia the First. I'm an old school Disney Princess fan and didn't like the idea of some new upstart joining their hallowed ranks. Zoe, on the other hand, just didn't seem to fancy the show much when we first stumbled upon it - she was more into Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, and the Backyardigans. But, sometime recently, all that changed. First, Zoe caught the princess bug … [Read more...]

Modest style…it’s not what you think

I'm madly in love with Mormon fashion bloggers right now. I stumbled upon them while researching style bloggers for work, and I feel like I've discovered a whole new world of super-cool kids I want to emulate. I just can't get enough. I don't want to eat. I don't want to sleep. I just want to scroll through the modest style Pinterest boards for outfit ideas! But it's not for the reason you might think. I'm not Mormon... or really, any particular religion for that matter. No, my reason is very … [Read more...]

A zombie movie for families

This is the first time I've attempted a movie review on this blog, and it may be kind of an odd one. I saw World War Z, Brad Pitt's zombie epic, last night and I absolutely loved it on multiple levels. It was a perfect summer blockbuster full of action, thrills and chills - but with a few other, more thoughtful touches that made it really outstanding. Other reviewers have liked the movie, but I'm not sure anyone else has called it a family movie. And of course, I'm talking about taking older … [Read more...]

5 reasons the Backyardigans rock

We don't watch a ton of TV in our house, but we do love the Backyardigans on Nick Jr. This is a fun, lively, computer-animated musical adventure that even adults will enjoy. If you're already a fan, check out this awesome Backyardigans episode guide that details the pertinent facts about each show. If you haven't seen it, here are our top five reasons why the Backyardigans is one of the best kids shows on TV. (If you asked Zoe, she would simply say "Tasha." She loves Tasha, the yellow hippo … [Read more...]
