Disney on Ice is back!

Disney on Ice

Are you like me - already sick of winter? For me, the novelty and beauty of snow and ice wears off right around December 26. Then, I have to find fun things to look forward to and get excited about in order to make it through the next three months of cold, gray weather. One of our most anticipated winter activities is taking Zoe to see Disney on Ice. We went last February for the first time and she absolutely LOVED it. Of course, we did the full-on dressing like a princess thing - as do about … [Read more...]

A glowing date night review

Bruce Munro Light at FPC

If you're looking for a romantic, unique date night this winter, I give my highest recommendation to the Bruce Munro: Light experience at Franklin Park Conservatory through February 8, 2014. These glowing images were taken there, but please know that photos and even video cannot do this installation justice. It truly has to be experienced in person for all its enchanting, magical splendor. "You need a medium to find yourself and to explain things to other people, and light happens to be mine." … [Read more...]

Westerville’s Watering Hole

Watering Hole 2011 & 2013

The other afternoon, Zoe and I lazed in the pool, played on water slides and swam until we were both exhausted. Was I dreaming or having summer flashbacks? No - we escaped to an indoor water park for a blissful and fun getaway. The best part? It's just minutes from our house! I'm talking about the wonderful community resource known as the Westerville Community Center, and specifically the high quality, 96,000 sq. ft. indoor aquatic facility known as The Watering Hole.  For $7.50 per person … [Read more...]

Dancing with the Nutcracker

Dancing with the Nutcracker 2013

I am in no way exaggerating when I say that BalletMet's annual Dancing with the Nutcracker event is one of the best-kept secrets in Columbus, Ohio. It is also one of the most magical and exciting experiences Zoe and I have ever shared. I am so thankful to the friend who tipped me off about the event last year (unfortunately just after it had happened) so that I was able to put a reminder on my calendar to watch for it this year! I'm even more glad that I wrestled a reluctant Zoebelle out of the … [Read more...]

What’s November for, anyway?

Peapod Play Cafe 2013

Early fall in Ohio is such a beautiful time - color-changing leaves, sunny days, pumpkin patches and fun on the farm. There almost are not enough weekends to fit in all the family fun that is fall in Columbus! Over the past few weeks, we've visited Pigeon Roost Farm (not once but twice), Leeds Farm, Boo at the Zoo and more. But things are quieting down now. It's deep fall - we're into November. The fall family fun farms (say that five times fast) have closed up shop. I'm not ready to start … [Read more...]

The best age for hiking

Mohican Hike 2013

Before we became parents, E and I loved going for hikes together in Ohio's beautiful, scenic forests - either south to Hocking Hills or north to Mohican State Park. We've hiked alone together, we've hiked with our dogs, but we've always hiked. We went on dozens of wonderful spring, summer and fall hikes in our pre-Zoe years, and even took some great hikes while we were pregnant. Once our little angel arrived, however, she put a bit of a kibosh on our hiking adventures for a time. It wasn't … [Read more...]

Obsessed with nekkid ladies

Nekkid Ladies at Cincinnati Nature Center - captured with love by Lisa

Don't blink or you'll miss them. Right now all over Ohio, tall, slim, cotton-candy pink "naked ladies" are enjoying their week to ten days of glory.  You won't find these blooms at fancy nurseries or in the manicured, landscaped gardens around our neighborhood - but part of the fun is going for long drives in the country to spot them. You can most often see them growing near old farm houses and in the shade of dilapidated barns. I'm obsessed with these slender beauties and have been … [Read more...]

Ohio’s grand carousels

2011 Columbus Commons & Columbus Zoo carousels

This post originally appeared in 2011 on Discovering Ohio, the official blog of TourismOhio (which also happens to be a client of my agency). Nothing brings to mind the sweet nostalgia of childhood summers like the vivid sights, unmistakable sounds and familiar motion of a grand and glorious carousel. I should know. I've ridden many a merry-go-round since beginning a new fun-finding mission with my young daughter: Zoe’s carousel tour of Ohio. The first carousel in the United States was … [Read more...]

Gem mining at Olentangy Indian Caverns

OlentangyGemMining

I can't tell you how many times I've driven past the weathered billboard for Olentangy Indian Caverns on 23 just north of Polaris. Many times I've even said "oh that's right, we really need to check that out," while driving past. And I knew the place was literally two miles from my house! But it still took me until this summer to visit. I think it took me so long to visit the caverns because I honestly expected the place to be kind of lame or schlocky - otherwise, I would have heard people … [Read more...]
