European travel with an 8 year old

Our lucky little family has just returned from possibly our most fantastic travel adventure yet: 10 glorious June days in Europe spread across three great cities. We visited London, York and Paris - each with its own marvelous look, feel, culture, cuisine and personality. Best of all, we connected with members of my extended family on two of our stops, rekindling relationships with my dear cousins whom I hadn't seen in more than 20 years and introducing them to E and Z. It was a joy! I'll … [Read more...]

Paradise for families: Beaches Turks & Caicos

It was tough not traveling for spring break this year, but I was warmed by memories of last March. After literally years of wishing and planning, our family had THE dream spring break trip last year: a week at the incomparable, all-inclusive Beaches Resort in the beautiful Turks and Caicos islands. It was the trip of a lifetime and we're all still talking about it - especially our 8 year old. And it was special for so many reasons! E and I were married on Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales in … [Read more...]

Cruising: a perfect multi-gen family vacation

We had a blast with our extended family cruising the Mexican Riviera over Christmas 2017 on the Norwegian Star. If you're looking for a trip the whole family will adore - from kiddos to grandparents - consider a cruise. Modern cruise lines truly offer something for every age and interest! The route We flew to Los Angeles a few days before Christmas, spent a night at my folks' house and then set out with them the next morning for the LA cruise terminal to board the Norwegian Star. We … [Read more...]

Five days of gratitude: day four

Day four of five days of gratitude. Here's what I'm grateful for today: 1. Words. I love writing. I love reading. I love learning new words. I love using old words other people don't use much anymore. I love big words. I love small words that say a lot. I love mellifluous words. I love alliteration. I love a good rhyme. I love song lyrics. I love poetry. I am grateful for glorious, glorious words. 2. Travel. I adore all stages of travel - dreaming about it, planning it, getting ready for … [Read more...]

Summertime beach cravings

I miss the beach. Somehow, it's just not summer without a visit to the ocean - salt water, sand, seagulls, shells and waves. I'm a bit spoiled, having grown up on Long Island with the beach as my back yard. Of course I didn't truly appreciate it as a kid - I wanted a pool instead! But I sure did enjoy growing up with horseshoe crabs, minnows and mussels as neighbors. What a wonderful, natural playground it was. And now, as a mom, I wish I could give Zoe more frequent access to the beach. Zoe … [Read more...]

The year without travel

I love to travel. I crave adventure. It's in my blood - I grew up crisscrossing the Atlantic visiting my grandparents and other family members in the UK at least once each year until my 20s. I flew from JFK to Heathrow at the age of 12 as an unaccompanied minor. My childhood's family vacations consisted of sailing trips instead of road trips (and believe me, at the time I didn't appreciate that, but I definitely do now). You see, my parents are soulless gypsies who travel the world and … [Read more...]

NYC with a three year old

This past May, our family embarked on the second of six trips to NYC in celebration of each of our nieces and nephews' 16th birthdays. This year was Malachi's turn and marked our attempt to take on the impossible: a family roadtrip to NYC that would please both our 16 year old nephew and three year old daughter. You should know that I had several horrible nightmares in the days leading up to our trip. I dreamed that Zoe darted out into NYC traffic (worst of all, in front of a yellow cab). I … [Read more...]

Summer roadtrip to Buffalo/Niagara

Zoe and I just got back from our first ever mother/daughter roadtrip. We drove up to Buffalo, spent two days in Western NY, including a visit to the incomparable Niagara Falls, then drove home on the fourth day. It was a fantastic summer trip, very driveable from Columbus even with a three year old, and I'd happily do it again. We had a blast! The Drive Columbus to Buffalo is right around 6 hours by car. I'm lucky - Zoe does really well on long drives. As long as I bring a cooler with … [Read more...]

Family fun tour of LA’s South Bay

We spent a week with family in Los Angeles over Christmas. Each day, we all set out to explore a fun new spot so that Zoe (age almost three) and her cousins, ages two and four, could enjoy getting to know each other again. It had been a long time since their last visit - too long. My folks moved to LA in 1994 and I've enjoyed visiting them each year since. Our trips to LA used to look a lot different before Zoe. We would rent a car and cruise Pacific Coast Highway, dip through the 'hood … [Read more...]

Maui mochi, manju and malasadas

This time last year, we were in beautiful Maui with our 18 month old baby girl. Now, we're buying a new home and fancy vacations are a thing of the past... and we have a 2.5 year old big girl! Zoe may not remember much about that amazing trip to Hawaii, but we sure do. We have these gorgeous photos to remind us forever, thanks to my splurge on professional family portraits while we were there. (I highly recommend doing that - it's money you'll never regret spending.) We have super fun … [Read more...]
