When we all look back at 2023, I wonder if we will remember it as the year AI went mainstream.
That’s certainly how it feels to me.
Artificial Intelligence started out as something we all knew about only from scifi movies. Steven Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence has been one of my favorites since it first broke my heart in 2001.
But little by little, AI is now becoming part of our day-to-day reality. I realized recently that we’ve actually been using a few forms of AI for several years now.
We got an Amazon Echo as a Christmas gift for my hubby a few years back. Before I knew it, we were hooked and had one on every floor of our house. We use Alexa in a myriad of ways around the home, from setting timers and reminders to sending messages to each other.
I’ve also used Grammarly as an extra spell-check and grammar-check for my writing for some time – another invaluable AI-powered tool.
In the past year, though, it feels like AI has really exploded. While I was a tad resistant at first, I’ll admit I have discovered the benefits of using several forms of AI in my work and life.
- Right at the end of 2022, Z and I discovered the AI photo images trend and had some fun uploading photos of ourselves and seeing what the various AI tools and apps did with them.
- This year I became a huge fan of Spotify’s AI DJ which curates a mix of old favorites and new music to suit my tastes. I listen almost exclusively this way now in my car or on my phone.
- Midway through this year, I learned about the Loom website for making AI-supported videos. This tool allows you to quickly and easily make videos for business purposes.
- In the fall, a colleague introduced me to Fireflies, an AI note-taking service that has become invaluable on Zoom and other video meetings. Fireflies Fred will come to all your meetings, take notes and send you a transcript and summary. Such a time-saver!
- I took an introduction to AI course on LinkedIn recently that really opened my eyes to potential business uses for generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Since then, I’ve used both tools for various research projects – and simply to satisfy my curiosity.
I can assure you that all writing on this blog and in my work will continue to be done by me and only me – but I am truly excited about research possibilities with generative AI tools.
