I’m not sure it will surprise anyone to learn that I love kids’ music. Especially live kids’ music performances.
I’ve seen countless live shows for grownups – including five KISS shows, Guns n Roses at Madison Square Garden and even nine Phish shows back in the day – but none can hold a candle to a truly rockin’ children’s band.
Take central Ohio’s own legendary kids’ music band, the Shazzbotts. Some of my fondest memories include rocking out at their live shows for kids back when Z was small enough to think that dancing in the space between the band and the crowd was the most fun thing ever. I am apparently still small enough to think that.
We also had some rip-roaring good times seeing Kidz Bop live in concert back when Z was still in the single-digit ages, although of course, I don’t think they actually sing at their live shows. They’re more of a pre-packaged, dancing pop group than an actual band of musicians.
Anyway, this Earth Day, central Ohio is in for a treat because epic kid rockers the Banana Slug String Band are coming from CA to Southern Delaware County to rock out with Preservation Parks. And you’re all invited!
I am so stoked for this show. First, the Banana Slug String Band has one of the best band names I’ve ever heard. Respect.
Second, it’s a FREE concert, although tax-deductible donations to Preservation Parks Foundation (on whose board of directors I happen to sit) are always welcome.
And third, the Banana Slugs sing about nature with earth-loving lyrics and songs adored by kids and parents alike. What better way to celebrate our amazing planet on Earth Day?
According to their website, the Banana Slug String Band has been creating and performing music for kids for over 30 years. They have played in 40 states, 5 countries and for over two million people. They have released 12 award-winning CDs. Their music is used in school curriculums and classes around the world. The slugs have brought their musical messages to noted festivals across North America.
How great does all this sound? The Banana Slugs are playing at Gallant Woods Park on Earth Day – Sunday, April 21 – at 3 pm. Plenty of other Earth Day festivities are taking place at the park starting around 1 pm, including food trucks, native Ohio plant sales and activities for the kiddos.
Yes, I may be biased because I work so closely with Preservation Parks – but I think this concert sounds like a fabulous way to celebrate Earth Day 2024.
Will we see you there?
