What to read, eat and watch this week

Have you caught Wicked movie fever yet?

I first saw Wicked on Broadway in 2011, and we were lucky enough to see the musical again in 2016 and 2018. It was enchanting and spellbinding all three times.

So naturally, I was one of the millions of musical theatre fans queued up to see part one of the Wicked movie during its opening weekend. I’ve never seen our movie theatre parking lot so full; I had to park around the corner at a furniture store.

I am confident that you will love the Wicked movie (part one) even if you haven’t read the book or seen the musical. It looks and sounds gorgeous, the two famous leads are spectacular in these career-defining roles, and it is packed with fun references and Easter Eggs paying homage to The Wizard of Oz. The story’s overall themes are so perfect that I think everyone will love it. I cried my way through the entire film in a state of sheer and utter joy. I can’t wait to see it again!

In addition to going to the movies for the first time in forever, I’ve also been enjoying several Taylor Sheridan properties on TV at home. The final season of Yellowstone and season two of both Lioness and Tulsa King have been gracing our screen. All are quite good, but intense in their own ways. For something different, I’m really looking forward to watching season two of Shrinking when my folks are here for Christmas!

As for reading, I’d say the fantasy realm has a firm hold on me this week, as I’m almost finished with the first book in the popular ACOTAR series, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. I’m relatively late to this romantic and slightly spicy faerie party, but I’m enjoying myself very much regardless. I love a good book with multiple sequels and this series is bound to keep me warm and entertained all winter long!

When it comes to eating, it’s fair to say that winter has finally made it to Ohio so I’ve been craving warm and comforting foods this week. Hubby made his legendary, award-winning chili this weekend and I plan to live off it all week. His chili is always superb and never the same twice, as he varies the meats, bean varieties and spices according to his mood.

If you haven’t made a good, robust chili in a while, grab a few kinds of fresh peppers from the produce section and several cans of tomatoes and beans, then spice it up to your heart’s content. I know hubby uses chili powder and brown sugar, but he’s also been known to get extremely creative with other ingredients and occasionally tosses diced fruit in.

Cooler weather always gets me craving food from warm climates, so we also tried a new-to-us Indian restaurant recently and fell in love. Doaba in Powell is a cute space with a generous menu and absolutely delicious flavors – I highly recommend it! Go for their midday Indian buffet on the weekends for a chance to try more dishes and really get your feast on.
