Midlife does not have to mean a “mid” life

Kids on Tiktok have a language and vernacular all their own.

I’ve seen it called “Gen Z speak.” There are even helpful online glossaries.

I’m fine with being called cringe or cheugy, but my kiddo knows better than to “okay, Boomer” me. I am NOT a Boomer, but rather a proud member of Generation X!

Still, I do get called sus sometimes by my beloved little Zoomer, and that’s okay – as long as she never refers to me as “mid.”

I may be known as the Midlife Mama on this blog, but there is nothing “mid” about this life!

When Gen Z/Tiktok kids/Zoomers use the word “mid,” they mean mediocre – and that is not a word I want to be associated with.

I never want to be mediocre or “mid” at anything I do. I don’t even want to eat mediocre food. If anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing to the best of our ability – with excellence wherever possible.

I don’t want to have a mid life – or even a mid midlife!

I want to blaze through my life in full color with tons of energy, having a blast and making waves. I want to make deep connections with people, give this life my all, laugh a lot and leave no opportunity uncovered or adventure unexplored.

I’m learning all the time and making mistakes. I am perpetually curious. I want to keep reading, growing, doing new things and failing! I want to try everything.

I want to take fabulous trips. I want to go on unique adventures – some we’ll love, some may not end up being our favorite. I want to learn from everything – good, bad and ugly – and write about it all.

I want to spend as much time with my kiddo as I can since she’s in middle school and won’t always want us around.

I want to spend as much time with my parents as I can since they’re getting up there in age and won’t always be around.

I want to spend as much time with my hubby as I can because he’s still my favorite person, he’s aging like a fine wine, and we will be empty nesters before we know it!

I want to spend as much time with my friends as I can because they uplift and energize and inspire me.

I want to create a home and life filled with peace, comfort, joy and love. I want to give back and help others. I want to be a good neighbor and a good citizen of this earth. I want to stay curious!

There’s never a time when we have to give up living and learning. My amazing fighter of a mother-in-law taught me that you can be happy, stay positive and keep loving your life even in the midst of truly terrible health problems. She was an amazing lady and such an inspiration!

If you’re a Gen X type like me, you might be facing your own mortality or that of your parents. You might be feeling yourself slow down a bit, put on some weight and struggle with aches, pains or worse. But you don’t have to go gentle into that good night.

Don’t be “mid” or mediocre in your midlife. You deserve to keep living your best life, no matter how old you are. This life is the only one we get so we might as well make the most of it.

What are some ways you’re infusing life, curiosity and fun into your own midlife? I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments below or over on Instagram or Facebook.
