People don’t realize that Jet’s makes great calzones

I’ve already written about my love of Italian bread and cheese sculpted into a slinky stromboli.

Truly, bread and cheese in pretty much any form – and from any culture – are just a divine gift.

Naan and paneer? Yum.

Pita and feta? Delish.

French baguette and brie? Oui, oui.

Quesadilla? Heck yes.

Grilled cheese sammie? Sign me up.

When it comes to bread and cheese creations, the Italian calzone is one of my all-time favorites.

I can’t remember the first time I had a calzone, but I know that I loved it. It’s like a pizza but with all the toppings tucked inside instead of on top.

What’s not to like? They are tidy, compact and delicious. Being able to pick them up and eat them with your hands is also a plus. I have an affinity for hand-held foods in general – from all corners of the world.

When I first moved to Ohio from NY, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to find classic NY-style pizza and calzones. Fortunately, I have been able to sleuth them out. There are actually quite a few of us former East coasters here in central Ohio.

But my favorite local calzones here in the midwest don’t come from a NY-style pizzeria. Instead, they come from a Michigan-based, Detroit-style pizzeria: Jet’s!

Yes, it’s true they gave their calzones a goofy name: Jet’s boats. But I’m happy to report that despite the name, they are in fact classic Italian calzones. They are also large, stuffed with any pizza toppings you like and served with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.

I’m always surprised by the number of people who don’t realize Jet’s makes calzones. I think it’s because of the silly name; they should just call them calzones on their menu!

I’m so thankful that I can still get delicious, hand-held calzones anytime I want one. Have you had a calzone lately – or ever? I’d love to hear your calzone stories in the comments below or over on Facebook or Instagram.
