A fun way for movie lovers to use ChatGPT

ChatGPT and I are buddies.

Ever since I finally decided to embrace our AI overlords, I’ve been having fun coming up with new ways to interact with ChatGPT.

My latest ChatGPT idea came to me in the middle of the night, as good ideas often seem to do. I had to immediately jot it down in Notes in my phone so I wouldn’t forget it. It was that good!

You see, my beloved hubby and I often have trouble finding a good movie to watch in the evenings. We have quite different tastes in movies. We like some of the same things – like action movies and thrillers.

But there are other areas where our tastes diverge. I like comedies, romances, family-friendly fare and international films. He prefers horror, English language films with no subtitles, and doesn’t mind a lot of violence or gore.

I typically have to read through movie descriptions and reviews to figure out if a movie is one E would like, I would like, or we would both like. Clearly, the goal is to find as many as possible that we BOTH will both like.

That’s where ChatGPT comes in as a real timesaver. I realized that I could pose this question to the AI tool and get immediate recommendations that would have taken me hours to pull together on my own.

Using the ChatGPT website (I could have also used the handy iPhone app), I simply typed in the following :

“You’re a longtime movie reviewer. I’m coming to you for recommendations of movies my husband and I will both really like. Eric likes horror movies, thrillers, action movies, scary movies, no subtitles, in English or English dubs only. I like family fare, romance, thrillers, action movies and award-winning movies. I love any movie that beautifully tells a compelling story. What movies would we both love? Please list in descending order with the one we would like most at the top.”

This is a perfect example of how AI tools like ChatGPT can save humans time. For me to come up with a list of movie ideas like this would have taken time that I just don’t have as a busy working mom.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, can do all this in mere seconds. Google’s Bard could probably do the same; in fact, for a test, I should ask it the same question and compare the movie recommendations.

ChatGPT immediately provided a list of movies and descriptions that I’m confident both E and I will like – as evidenced by the ones on the list we’ve already seen and enjoyed. Here’s what ChatGPT gave us:

  • Inception – A mind-bending thriller with a compelling story.
  • The Shape of Water – An award-winning romantic fantasy with stunning visuals.
  • The Dark Knight – A gripping action-thriller, especially if Eric enjoys superhero movies. (Side note: what’s with ChatGPT being a wee bit sexist here? E doesn’t prefer superhero movies but I do!)
  • La La Land – A beautiful musical that combines romance and award-winning elements.
  • Jurassic Park – A thrilling adventure that can be enjoyed by both of you.
  • The Silence of the Lambs – A classic psychological thriller with intense suspense.
  • The Prestige – A mystery thriller with a captivating narrative.
  • Inglourious Basterds – Quentin Tarantino’s unique take on World War II.
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – A visually stunning, quirky comedy.
  • The Revenant – A visually stunning and intense survival drama.
  • Whiplash – A powerful drama about music and ambition.

When I asked for even more options because we had seen most of the films on that initial list, here were the follow-up suggestions. ChatGPT gave me the movie years this time because I specifically asked for films from 2008 – 2023:

  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) – A visually stunning action film set in a post-apocalyptic world.
  • Django Unchained (2012) – Quentin Tarantino’s gripping Western with action and a compelling story.
  • The Martian (2015) – A thrilling sci-fi survival story with humor and suspense.
  • Baby Driver (2017) – An action-packed, music-driven heist film.
  • Get Out (2017) – A unique and thought-provoking horror-thriller.
  • Birdman (2014) – A visually inventive film with a mix of comedy and drama.
  • Gravity (2013) – A breathtaking space thriller with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
  • The Social Network (2010) – A compelling drama about the founding of Facebook.
  • Joker (2019) – A dark and intense character study in the world of comic book villains.
  • 1917 (2019) – A visually stunning war film with a gripping narrative.
  • Parasite (2019) – A genre-blending South Korean film with a unique narrative.
  • Knives Out (2019) – A clever and entertaining mystery-comedy.
  • The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) – A darkly humorous take on the excesses of Wall Street.
  • Interstellar (2014) – Christopher Nolan’s epic space exploration film.
  • Logan (2017) – A gritty and emotional superhero film in the X-Men franchise.

I was a little surprised ChatGPT didn’t suggest any AI-themed movies. Maybe that would have been too obvious?

As you can see, using ChatGPT to get movie recommendations that blend two people’s tastes was a great use of this tool. Next time you’re trying to find a good movie to watch with someone you love – especially if you both have different tastes in films – I recommend you try this out yourself!

Have you come up with any ingenious uses for our new AI friends? I’d love to hear them in the comments below or over on Facebook or Instagram.
