If you don’t like hearing about wet desserts, you might want to sit this one out.
Tres Leches cake is one of my all-time favorite desserts, and it’s basically just soggy, wet cake. I know that sounds a little revolting, but hear me out: it’s the most delicious thing ever.
Tres Leches means “three milks” in Spanish. It is a popular Latin American dessert where a sponge cake is soaked in a mixture of three types of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream, resulting in an almost pudding-like texture.
I first wrote about Tres Leches cake in my ode to international desserts. I can’t remember the first time I had it, but I’ve loved it for years. And you don’t have to travel to faraway climes to taste this sweet treat – it’s available right here in Lewis Center at certain Mexican restaurants and sometimes where you’d least expect it.
Here are my three favorite Tres Leches cake providers in and around Lewis Center:
- Tula Taqueria is a sweet little Mexican eatery on Lazelle just off Polaris. It’s not truly Lewis Center, but still LC-adjacent. The wall art is gorgeous and tacos are to die for here – and yes, they serve horchata, aka Mexican rice water which is another delicious treat I adore when I can find it. Their Tres Leches cake is adorned with strawberries and just lovely at $6 a slice.
- El Molcajete is a Mexican restaurant on the corner of 23 and Polaris in Lewis Center. The food here is very good and they, too, serve horchata to drink (in fact, horchata and Tres Leches cake often seem to go together for some reason). Their Tres Leches cake is HUGE and here’s a unique twist: they have a drive-through window on the side of the restaurant, so once in a while I’ll actually call ahead and then pick up Tres Leches to go without ever leaving my car. I believe theirs clocks in at about $8 per slice.
- My favorite Tres Leches comes from an unexpected place: a Greek cafe! Yes, Eat Greek on 23 in Lewis Center has the most delicious Tres Leches cake along with delectable baklava and other desserts. I don’t know why this particular cake was so perfect, but the pudding-like consistency and sweet flavor were like heaven in my mouth. It is $6 per slice and well worth it. Their Mediterranean veggie platter is also one of my favorite meals anywhere in the LC.
I hope I’ve convinced you to give Tres Leches cake a try. If not, that just leaves more sweet, soggy goodness for me.
