I’m writing about reading again.
This may seem odd to some, but my ongoing blog series about book recommendations has been a great way for me to keep track of all the books I read and enjoy.
Plus, I’m the opposite of a gatekeeper – I’m a compulsive oversharer. If I read a great book, I immediately want to share it with everyone I know!
Here’s what I’ve been reading lately.
- My 2023 Judy Blume bender continued with Smart Women. You can read my other Judy Blume reviews – but just know I’m a raving fan. This is another of her books for grownups and I loved it. It contains the same delicious authenticity and intimacy of her novels for teens, but this time it’s about divorced moms. They get up to lusty shenanigans – and experience parenting and mental health struggles – and it’s a terrific read.
- I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reed. This book is a t-r-i-p-p-y psychological thriller. It’s a debut novel, which I’m obsessed with because someday I hope some random mom blogger is writing about MY debut novel. Beyond that, it’s simply and utterly unique. There are so many twists and turns and some utterly terrifying scenes. Just wow. If you like stories with unreliable narrators, this is the most unreliable I’ve found and I LOVED it. It’s been made into a Netflix movie but I think I want to read and savor it one more time before I watch the movie version.
- The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave. This is a unique and fast-paced thriller that has been made into an Apple TV limited series starring Jennifer Garner. I don’t want to share too much for fear of giving anything away, but I really enjoyed reading this and I look forward to watching it. Great story, believable characters and I like the way the mystery unfolds. There’s also a teen/mom storyline that I particularly related to, being the mom to a sometimes prickly teen myself.
- Under The Whispering Door by TJ Klune. I love me some TJ Klune plus this story features a bisexual character, which is rare and appreciated. It got off to a bit of a slow and dull start, and didn’t steal my heart as irrevocably as The House in the Cerulean Sea, but I definitely liked this book a lot. The characters won me over by the end, big time. It’s a beautiful meditation on grief and the afterlife that I believe could provide some real comfort to open-minded people who have lost loved ones. If you believe in ghosts or spirits, you’ll especially like this story.
- Bretman Rock’s You’re That Bitch (And Other Cute Lessons About Being Unapologetically Yourself) and Molly Shannon’s Hello, Molly! are the two latest celebrity memoirs that I’ve devoured. In case you are a fan of this genre as well, check out my other celeb tell-all reviews. I absolutely loved both of these memoirs. I’ve been a fan of Bretman Rock since he was a skinny kid doing makeup tutorials on YouTube, and I love the amazing career and life he has manifested and created for himself. Reading about his Filipino roots and family, and his rise to the top, made me appreciate him even more. As for Molly Shannon, I’m not an SNL watcher so I’m a little late to this party, but I have recently come to really love her too – she’s funny, smart and has had to rise above some truly tragic family stuff to get where she is today. Her memoir is a hilarious and inspiring read and gave me some good motivation to go after what I want in my business and not take no for an answer.
If you’ve read any great books lately, shoot me a note in the comments below or over on Facebook or Instagram. I’m always looking for my next good read.
